Abstract
Street names in the city of Constantine represent far more than functional elements of urban
navigation. As symbolic markers of space, they reflect complex historical, cultural, and political
dynamics that have shaped the city over time. Partly inherited from the colonial period and
subsequently redefined in the post-independence era, these odonyms illustrate processes of
rupture, continuity, and national reappropriation. Through an examination of street-naming
practices, this article highlights how Constantine’s urban space serves as a repository of
collective memory and a tool for constructing national narratives. The study emphasizes the
crucial role of odonyms in preserving urban heritage, demonstrating their ability to embed local
history into everyday life while reinforcing the relationship between memory, territory, and identity
