Advancing English Medium Instruction in Algerian Higher Education: The Effect of Adaptive Pedagogical Strategies on Teacher Academic Performance and Student Engagement
Some teachers may face difficulties in engaging with English Medium Instruction (EMI) courses including the shift from using their native language to run disciplinary courses in English. These issues prompt many scholars to adapt strategies for training and assisting EMI teachers’ performance in EMI courses. The current literature on the training and support of teachers in executing EMI pedagogy has received inadequate attention. The deficiency of research on preparing educators for EMI pedagogy has resulted in a notable gap in the literature. This study aims at examining teachers and students’ common challenges in pursuing EMI courses and their impact on their academic performance and engagement. The study employed a quantitative design with a sample of 14 EMI teachers and 60 undergraduate students enrolled in engineering courses. The design involved conducting pre- and post-test experiments and a self-report questionnaire after engaging in the courses. The participants were divided into a CG =30 and an EG=30 receiving the treatment. Findings indicated that EG students and teachers increased their engagement and academic performance prior to implementing adaptive strategies in EMI courses. Indeed, challenges associated with the EMI courses such as inadequate teaching materials and insufficient classroom interactions decreased only after employing adaptive solutions, including alternative textbooks, selfreflection skills, technological devices, and the first language. Therefore, implementing EMI programs is challenging, necessitating teacher development, institutional support, and effective student self-directed and peer learning strategies. In addition, the adaptive strategies utilized by students and teachers provide insights into how other EMI courses could enhance their adaptation.

This article examines, through an exploratory case study, the online language practices of a small group of students of French at the University of Batna (Algeria) and their function in identity construction. In a context of rapid sociolinguistic changes, exacerbated by digital interactions, digital writing has become a prime vantage point for grasping the dynamics of local "youth speech." Far from being mere deviations from the norm or ephemeral linguistic games, we hypothesize that these creative usages constitute interactional resources for identity construction. The central research question is therefore to determine how, and by what linguistic means, students shape, negotiate, and affirm a specific Batnean identity in the digital space. The study employs a dual framework. Theoretically, it is situated within urban sociolinguistics (Bulot, 2004; Calvet, 1999) and digital discourse analysis (Paveau, 2017), viewing language as an act of identity and self-presentation. Methodologically, a qualitative discourse analysis was conducted on a corpus of authentic conversations (Messenger group). The analysis focuses on code-switching phenomena (dialectal Arabic, French, English), lexical inventiveness (e.g., "bagaindi"), and metalinguistic debates. The results demonstrate that linguistic creativity is not anarchic but follows a precise logic. It functions as a three-step mechanism: it draws on the resources of a plurilingual youth sociolect, it adapts to the constraints and potentialities of digital writing (conciseness, expressiveness), and it aims for the negotiation of belonging. The study notably reveals that the affirmation of local identity involves strategies of distinction (and the management of lexical disparities, as evidenced by debates on the meaning of the term "bagaindi") while simultaneously articulating with a global and connected youth identity, illustrating a hybrid identity. Ultimately, Batnean online "youth speech" is not merely a reflection, but a powerful tool for negotiation and self-affirmation, actively shaping what it means to be young and Batnean today.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Language Learning: Enhancing Communities of Practice Among Algerian University Students
2025-06-12) Merazi, Nadjet
This study aimed to evaluate the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and virtual communities of practice on enhancing language learning among university students, focusing on the development of grammar and communication skills, as well as fostering collaboration and cultural exchange. The study adopted a survey-based methodology, utilizing a structured questionnaire and advanced statistical techniques for data analysis. It targeted a diverse sample of 550 students from various academic disciplines to ensure a comprehensive and representative dataset. The findings indicate that AI tools and virtual communities significantly contribute to language learning by offering interactive and personalized educational experiences. However, these technologies face challenges such as weak digital infrastructure and limited technical skills among students, highlighting the need for investments in improving infrastructure and offering comprehensive training programs for students and educators. The study recommends integrating these technologies with traditional methods to enhance language learning experiences and make them more inclusive and interactive.

L'IMAGE DE L'AUTRE SOUS LES PROJECTEURS A TRAVERS LE PRISME MEDIATIQUE
2025-07-07) Ghoul, Zahia; Laraoui, Nour El Houda

The modern era has witnessed significant developments in the field of linguistics, which have attracted considerable attention from scholars. These developments are marked by the emergence of various Western linguistic schools post-Ferdinand de Saussure's foundational theories. Notably, these include the Functional School, the Immersion School, and the Generative-Transformational School. In stark contrast to these Western institutions, there exists a distinguished Arab school, known as the "Modern Khalilian School." It is acknowledged that while these Western schools and their Arab counterpart primarily focus on language studies, each adopts a distinct methodological approach to language analysis. These approaches can either be specialized, focusing on specific linguistic levels, or comprehensive, encompassing multiple levels of linguistic analysis. The primary goal of this research paper is to clarify and compare the methodologies employed by the aforementioned Western structuralist schools and the Khalilian School. This comparative analysis aims to explore their respective approaches to linguistic analysis. Furthermore, this study seeks to underscore the importance of the Khalilian School, which embodies the ideologies of Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi. This is particularly pertinent in an era where the achievements of Western schools are often celebrated, potentially overshadowing the profound legacy of ancient Arab linguistics and the pioneering contributions of early Arab scholars. This research advocates for a focused examination of the scientific analytical methods utilized by Arab linguists in formulating precise grammatical rules. It emphasizes the need for an unbiased approach towards various theories, free from ideological predispositions, and stresses the importance of respecting the intrinsic value of each linguistic theory, regardless of its theoretical underpinnings

2025-06-12) Boudechiche, Nawal; Thelaidjia, Nadir
We are examining the added value of digitizing a text from the textbook of the third year of primary school, focusing on reading pronunciation and comprehension. Considering the contributions of explicit learning in the digital era, particularly in the visual and sound stages of reading, we have created an educational platform, following the observation of the difficulties of primary school learners. Our findings support the use digital support for the beginner child-reader, like the potentialities offered by the flipped classroom approach.
