Abstract

This study explores the effects of the forced relocation of residents from the Casbah of Algiers to peripheral neighborhoods, focusing on its impact on both individual and collective identity. It is based on the hypothesis that a city is not merely a physical space, but also a bearer of collective memory and deep social ties. The relocation to areas lacking the architectural, social, and cultural features of the Casbah led to the breakdown of social relations and a sense of identity loss. In response, residents attempted to preserve their sense of belonging by renaming the new neighborhoods "Casbah" — a symbolic act aimed at reconstructing collective memory. The study addresses two key questions: to what extent does this toponymic reappropriation express a rejection of relocation and represent a form of symbolic adaptation? And, have the residents succeeded in preserving their urban and social heritage despite being uprooted? The research adopts a sociological, descriptive, and analytical approach, using interviews, direct observation, and content analysis in the neighborhoods of Thénia and Rive Verte. Findings reveal that while the relocation caused a loss of symbolic landmarks, it did not erase identity. Residents employed cultural resistance strategies to keep their collective memory alive. The study recommends that relocation policies incorporate cultural and social dimensions to ensure real integration and prevent the marginalization of displaced populations.
