Item An Analysis of Algerian Learners and Teachers’Beliefs and Use of Mother Tongue in EFL Classroom(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2019) Tihal, Wafia; Hamitouche, Fatiha (Directeur de thèse)This study describes, explores, and analyzes both Algerian secondary school learners and teachers’ use of Algerian Arabic in EFL classroom. It also aims at detecting the different situations that necessitated and still necessitate the implementation of the learners’ mother tongue in two public secondary schools in Algiers (Mohamed Hajress and Rabah Bittat secondary schools). The findings revealed that the language learners and teachers favor the use of L1 in ‘handful’ situations and believe it to be an aid for comprehending difficulties, checking learners’ understanding and clarifying ambiguities. They all wish it not to be used in giving instructions or explaining grammar. The findings also indicate that both foreign language learners and teachers agree that learners’ mother tongue should not be completely excluded from the language classroom.Item Designing an Interactive Self Instructional(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2018) Lahdir, Sakina; Khaldi, Kamel (Directeur de thèse)Our research is related to e-learning and to action-research. In this respect, we were concerned with the existing problems related to the teaching/learning of the current classroom-based course of English at the University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene (USTHB). The present research is thus aimed to explore the need for the design of an online course of English for science and technology, to be a complementary solution to the face-to-face course given the fact that the latter has shown limitations in the Algerian context and that new needs for change are necessary. This led us to carry out a needs analysis assessment. We obtained relevant information such as the students’ learning needs. We hence opted for an action research based on the use of the learning environment MOODLE, an eclectic approach, and evaluation criteria. We subsequently developed two courses, one related to biology and the other to computer science some units of which have been piloted on the university’s platform. They may be refined and used in business English.Item DICTIONARY USE VERSUS TEACHER\'S ASSISTANCE AND THEIR EFFECT ON VOCABULARY UNDERSTANDING IN READING COMPREHENSION(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2018) Lounas, Ahmed; Hamitouche, Fatiha (Directeur de thèse)This thesis investigates the use of the dictionary versus0teacher’s help and the effect of both on vocabulary understanding during reading classes as well as the opinions of both teachers and EFL students regarding dictionary use. The study is carried on 1st and 3rd year EFL students at Ecole Normale Superieure de Bouzareah (ENSB), Algiers to test whether there is any change through time.Several aspects of dictionary use such as dictionary skills and the types of dictionaries preferred and usedare examined as part of this study. The researcher used a mixed method research design for a better understanding of the research problem. Tocollect data from students and teachers, the researcherused instrumentssuch as questionnaires and interviews as well as a reading for vocabulary field test that comprised 2 courses and 2quizzes for both 1st and 3rd year EFL students. The results of the study reveal thatthe majority of the teachersallow their students to use a dictionary during Reading Comprehension classes and that most of the teachers and students favorthe monolingual dictionaryItem Post-Colonial Discourse As Mediation Of The Western Ideological References. Two Literary Works as a Case Study(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2018) Kermezli, Abdelkader; Mansouri, Brahim (Directeur de thèse)This thesis investigates the post-colonial literary writing as expression of the post-colonial intellectual class. The foundational assumptions it is based on revolve around the contention that the colonial structures have enduring effects on the formation of the post-colonial ideology, values, and worldview. These effects are assumed to be markedly salient in fictional works written before and after independence. The colonial/Imperial structures are explored in order to demonstrate the mechanisms that govern the emergence of the colonized voice, mainly in literary works. It is by means of colonial processes that colonialism/imperialism managed to govern, frame, re-name, and design the colony after the image entertained by colonial/imperial discourses and which stresses the superiority of the Western modelItem Depth of Educational Change in the LMD Reform(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2019) Sail-Terki, Hind; Bensemmane, Faiza (Directeur de thèse)Any educational reform initiative is supposed to cause change and this change is deep when it proves to have an impact on the beliefs and practices of the teachers. The present mixed-methods confirmatory case study aims at examining the depth of the educational change entailed by the Algerian LMD reform of higher education in the English Department of Blida 2 University. It seeks to answer the following research questions: 1. did the reform cause change in teachers’ own beliefs about teaching and learning? 2. did it cause change in their teaching approaches and practices? 3. did it cause change in the use of new instructional materials? In theory, the LMD curriculum should create change by shifting teachers’ beliefs towards a more learner-centred orientation, making teachers as well as tutors adhere to learner-centred practices and encouraging the use Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in teaching and learningItem Learner Autonomy and Context Specificity: A Study of Students’Discourses on EFL Learning and Teaching at Mira University of Béjaia, Algeria(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2019) Ghout-Khenoune, Lynda; Bensemmane, Faiza (Directeur de thèse)This study attemptedto explore EFL students’ discourses on English language learning and teaching and toexamine their readiness for autonomous learning. A qualitative framework was embraced to accommodatethe interpretivist perspectiveunderpinning this study. Language Learning Histories of the studentsand questionnaire data were combinedin order to shed light on the prevailing learning culture in this context. The findings demonstrate the students’ readiness for learner autonomy through their understanding of their complex learning context and their lack of readiness for autonomy as they consider the teacher as the sole figure of authority because of a non-supportive learning environmentItem African women’s search for [re]insription in modern Africa(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2018) Azzoug, Fatima; Bensemmane, M’hamed (Directeur de thèse)This thesis aims at dissecting the workings of the patriarchal ethos as denounced by the two African women writers, the Nigerian Buchi Emecheta and the Algerian Malika Mokeddem. The corpus is selected on the basis of a variety of literary sub-genres: autobiography, fictional narratives and war novels. This corpus falls in the category of resistance literature as the novels selected portray women’s victimization by patriarchy and women’s attempts and ways to stand against it. Consequently, the study is backed up by the feminist, postcolonial and psychoanalytic tools of analysis that explain how the girl/woman is conceived of by the patriarchal society and how the woman inverts this image as both an expression of her rejection of this ethos and an articulation of her selfhood. This study is also based on the comparative approach. It highlights that though the two women writers belong to different countries and eras, they are similar in more than one aspect in their reflection of how patriarchy frames the girls’/women’s existence in the family and in society as a whole. The study also shows that Buchi Emecheta and Malika Mokeddem are different in the intensity of their refutation of patriarchyItem Tradition and the Individual Talent in T.S. Eliot’s and Wallace Stevens’ Poetry(2017) Benmezal, Farid; Amrane, Nadjia (Directeur de thèse)This thesis is a comparative study of two American poets, T.S. Eliot and Wallace Stevens, whose poetry exemplifies the two major opposing trends in American Modernism. My aim is to examine the different ways in which the two poets respond to the solipsism of Romantic poetry. Eliot turns to the historical past of Europe to find a cultural transcendental ego to suppress the individual ego of Romanticism. Against the Romantic solipsism and Eliot’s appeals to tradition, distant and abstract from the contemporary conditions of modern America, Stevens seeks a poetics that focuses on immediate conditions of American experience to forge a literary tradition more fully responsive to the cultural and material impulses of the new worldItem BLAIR’S BRITAIN AND THE IRAQ WAR (2003)(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2016) Douifi, mehamed; Mansouri, Brahim (Directeur de thèse)Within the framework of Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) the orthodox reductionist views on language have been superseded by a much more flexible and manifold conceptualization of meaning-making in language use. The latter is, therefore, seen as a highly complex social practice which is a product of, among many other things, the cultural, historical, and political conditions in a given 'epistemic community'. Based on a cross-disciplinary approach, this research undertakes a systematic analysis of Britain's involvement in the 2003 Iraq War. As it stands, this research posits that cognition in discourse analysis could not be ignored or relegated to an auxiliary status. Rather, it lays emphasis on the relevance of what van Dijk calls the "cognitive interface" to adequately dismantle the construction of ideology in language useItem Self and Other in the Works of African American Novelists during the Black Renaissance and Algerian Novelists during the Algerian War of Independence(University of algiers2 Abu El Kacem Saad Allah جامعة الجزائر 2 أبو القاسم سعد الله, 2015) KACED, ASSIA; Deramchia, Yamina (Directeur de thèse)Through the present research work, we aim at confronting four contemporary post-colonial writers, who are, Jean Toomer and Zora Neale Hurston from the United States of America, and Kateb Yacine and Assia Djebar from Algeria with notions of representation, identity, and culture. While Jean Toomer and Zora Neale Hurston wrote their novels at the time when the African American people suffered from political, economic and cultural inequities between the white and the black people in America, Toomer’s Cane in 1922 and Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God in 1937 ; both Kateb Yacine and Assia Djebar wrote their novels during the period of Algerian colonization, Nedjma in 1955, and Les enfants du nouveau monde In fact, this thesis operates on the principle that there are recurrent, common parameters existing within the two peoples, Africa American and Algerian, and which stem from shared historical, political and cultural referents, those of peoples deprived of their identities and self-esteem by colonizing and oppressing powers. The writers we explore in the present work bridge racial, cultural, and linguistic divides in facing the same prejudices and stereotypes that have ‘Othered’ them. They adopt the same methods in reconstructing the Self that has been negated by the colonizing Other. In both cases, the people oppressed by a superior power are depicted in stereotypical terms, their culture belittled, and their identity blurred. in 1962. Through the present research work, we aim at analyzing the thematic correspondences between the two pairs of writes, particularly in the way they conceive of ‘Self’ and ‘Other’
