Résumé:
In this contribution, which is part of the field of sociolinguistics, we have
focused on studying the representations that young people in Algeria have of the French
language (its status and future). Our objective is to identify the different images
attributed to French in an Algerian linguistic landscape that is multilingual. This
empirical study was conducted in Algiers (the capital of Algeria) among young people
from one of the oldest districts of the city, namely the Bab El Oued district. This field
study aims, on the one hand, to identify the representations linked to the use of the
French language in an Algerian sociolinguistic context today. On the other hand, this
research will also reveal the place that the French language now occupies among our
respondents and its relationship with other languages, particularly Algerian Arabic and
English.
